Project Entrepreneurship

Secret Sandwich   (NORTH UNIVERSITY OF MALAYSIA)


To train students to engage in entrepreneurship at the university for subject Entrepreneurship Behavior  and Skills I have been tasked to set up a group to create a business. Established business should be based entrepreneurship in which the product to be sold shall be created and sold. So I have set up a group of 9 people, and think about whether the business to be established. We took a week to think of a product to be produced. Before that, we had asked for permission to do business in the university campus by apply a business license.

Once an agreement is made we decided to set up business in Sandwich on campus. We chose to set up the sandwich business. Our business name is SECRET SANDWICH. Our business focused on selling sandwich around students’ residential hall and lecture room. We choose this business because we believe it can provide many benefits to students. This is because we believe that students have a fixed timetable that causes them have no time to have their breakfast and dinner at the cafe  . Thus through our business, it is a bit much to help solve the problems faced by students in UUM. We also believe that breakfast is very important for a particular student before starting their day at college. This is because, if students do not have their breakfast before go to college it can give effect to students to focus in their lecture during the learning process. Besides that, we choose sandwich as our main product because it can give nutrients and energy supplies for students daily activities. In addition, we also believe sandwich is suitable to be eaten in any conditions either while waiting for the bus or during the exchange process class. Therefore, we believe that this business can get good responses from all students and staff in this university and we believe it can grow and compete with other foods businesses in this university.


Selling variety type of sandwich is a product type concept. We are going to make sandwiches which currently we planned in two flavours first and we are going to sell it by putting the sandwiches at the planned Student Residential Hall block’s business site in UUM. The two flavours are sardine with potatoes and also egg with potatoes. The sandwiches we are going to put at the business site of planned Student Residential block will be under the care of hired friends that comes from that particular block to help us to observe the site, to take care of the hygiene and to avoid the sandwiches or the sales money in a container we are going to provide to be stolen.

Reasons for choosing the business of selling sandwich:
1)   Demands and needs.
Most of the blocks in Student Residential have that one particular spot where you can sell things for students to buy. We can see that there are highs demands of providing more food at that business site as students will get hungry usually at nights where café are already closed. Therefore, we saw this business as an opportunity and also to fulfil the need of these students.

2)   Saves students’ time.
Being a student, it’s hard for them to prepare a healthy breakfast as they are lack of time to do that. Usually, students have classes’ starts from early of the morning. They wouldn’t be able to prepare food for breakfast. Instead of letting them buy junks food such as biscuits, snacks and other food that is not healthy for them to eat for breakfast while waiting for the gaps to go for a heavy meal, we give them options to have a better and healthier breakfast by selling this sandwiches. What they need to do is just walk through the business site that is usually the same route for students to go to the bustop to buy our sandwiches before going to the class which will be very easy and consume lesser time than preparing their own breakfast.

3)    Reasonable pricing.
 In order to attract students to buy our sandwiches, we will charge a very reasonable price for each of them. It will be the price that students are afford to buy and they will buy again which will makes us have repeat sales too.

 MARKETING OPPORTUNITY

1.    Product
The product we offer is sandwich. The sandwich that we sell has two flavours, sardines with potato flavour while the second flavor is eggs with potatoes. Students nowadays are very busy and in the morning the students will be rushing go to class. So, they may not have enough time to prepare breakfast. Our purpose to sell this product is to facilitate students to get breakfast in a simple way, cheaper and healthier. As we know breakfast is important for health. With breakfast, students will be easy to study and are able to concentrate in class. Sandwiches that we offer are very suitable for breakfast, because this breakfast is not too heavy.


2.  Place
Place plays an important role to businesses. A strategic location of an office and also convenience for customer to access will be an advantage for a business. Our business’ is located at UUM and will be operate in Student Resident Hall at EON and YAB. We chose to sell our products in YAB and EON because in this place does not have much competition.

3.  Price
Besides place and product, customers always look for the best price when they purchase something. The price that we offer is affordable and it is actually cheap. The price that we planned to sell for a slice of the sandwich is only RM 1.00 which is very affordable for students.

4.   Promotion
Promotion is important as we need to spread out the information about the product we sell to customers. There are so many ways to deliver information about us but we choose to spread it out by using brochure, banner and advertisement. We use a poster to promote our products. We are going to put the poster on the board of Student Resident Hall at YAB and EON.


BUSINESS PROCESS

1.     Input
Input is the factors of production used in the production process. It does not include raw materials, but also involves the entrepreneur in that process. Among the materials that are used for the production of our products are white bread of Gardenia, Ayam Brand’s sardines, potatoes, onions, garlics, mayonnaise and eggs.

2.     Output Process
The production process is the process of transformation which makes the input transform into something that can be exploited. This process is also called input value-added process. Our production process is the result of innovations to the existing sandwich available at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). To make the sandwiches we produce to be more attractive, we have to make a difference in terms of taste of the sandwich compared to the other existing sandwich in UUM. It can attract students and the local community in UUM to enjoy a taste of the new sandwich. It not only can be purchased at very reasonable prices, but also to enjoy the difference in taste of the sandwich.

3.     Marketing Process
Marketing process is the process to create, develop and retain customers in an economic activity. In other words, marketing is the process of communication in the transmission of information about the value of the goods or services to consumers. In this process, we will do a sandwich delivery to each Student Residential Hall in UUM. We will also do promotions in the form of a poster which will post it on the bulletin board in each Student Residential Hall. It aims to entice students to try to sandwich our products.

4.    Output
Output is the final goods or services produced by a business. The resulting output will go through the sales process, where it will be distributed to customers and bring profit to business. Output in our business is Egg Sandwich + Potato and Sardines Sandwich + Potato.

    In conclusion, from an entrepreneurial project that we can learn a lot about entrepreneurship. This field is not easy because it requires the commitment of all team members. We are satisfied with the results of our work because all team members can contribute and collaborate in the success of this business. We run this business for two months and after our estimated profit rather good. After this we also have the intention to continue this business because we feel that this business can go a long way and grown with time. In addition we will also consider ways to upgrade the way our business when it is in a stable condition later. For us entrepreneurship is an area that is very enjoyable as we can mingle with society to promote our products.
